Getting started
The content on connect2earth is provided by members of the community. So we need your - as a member of the community - help in keeping the site nice and clean and tidy! Here's what you can do:
-
Before adding content to the site please check the Terms & Conditions and what kind of content we are looking for
-
Make sure you only add content that is relevant, not offensive in any way, and for which you own the copyright! Failure to do so will mean your content will be removed. Sorry.
-
Take a look at what other people have been adding. Read the stories, watch the videos, admire the pictures and rate them!
-
If you find content that you don't feel is appropriate flag it and we'll remove it as soon as possible!
-
And of course, while you are doing all of this join us in marveling at just how important our planet is to us. How important we find the variety of life that lives on it. The vistas we see. The sites we marvel at. The things we care about. :)
Problems signing up?
It won't accept my username or password
The sign-up requires you to have at least 5 characters in both your username and your password. Also only use letters and numbers - no special characters (like % & * etc) and no spaces.
It says my email address is not valid
If you are positive that your email is correct, just check that there are no trailing spaces after your address (especially if you are copy and pasting it in). Otherwise just make sure that the @ is in it.
What is the security code for?
The letters that appear in the image on the sign up form are a security code (also known as CAPTCHA) that help us ensure that only real people - and not very annoying automated spammers - sign up to connect2earth. Because other computers are unable to solve the CAPTCHA, any user entering a correct solution is a real human!
If you can't read the code, just click on the 'reload captcha' link and a new one will appear. If you still have difficulties, contact us and we will help you get signed up. No problem.
What happens next?
Once you have completed the form you will receive an email message from us. Just click on the link in the email to confirm your registration. If you don't receive this email, you might want to check your spam or junk mail folder just in case it ended up in there.
When you registration is confirmed you are all set to start uploading content and changing the world!
Can't login?
You can login via either the Login link that appears on the top right of the page or on the sign up page.
Just enter your display name and password and you're done.
If you have forgotten your password just click on the 'Lost password? Click here' link on the sign up page and we will email you your password again.
My username and password are correct but I still can't log in
Write to us and let us know - we can figure it out together with you.
Problems uploading?
When you upload content you need to enter a range of information (title, description, tags, categories) that will tell other people more about what you are adding. The more information you add the better!
What are tags?
A tag is basically a label, which is used to help mark pieces of content. When you upload content to connect2earth you can add as many tags as you like and whichever ones you want. The tags will then help other people find content that they are interested in. So if you add a video on global warming, you might want to add the tags global warming, climate change etc. That way when the next person comes to site looking for videos on the topic they can find your one!
Make sure you separate each tag by a comma.
What are the categories?
To help you and others find content on this site we've come up with some useful categories. Sure they're a little arbitrary, but just use them as a guide. You can also tag your uploaded content to your heart's content! To find out more about the categories visit the What are we looking for page.
Uploading video?
Once you've entered the information about your video, click on the 'submit' button to proceed. You can then select the video on your computer using the 'Select' button and click 'Upload' to, well, upload!
The maximum size of your video must be 100MB and it must be in one the following formats: avi, mpeg, mp4, mov, 3gp, wmv.
Once your video has been processed you will receive an email saying it is ready to view online. Please be patient however as it may take a little while for this to happen, especially if lots of other people are adding videos at the same time!
Uploading a picture?
Once you've entered the information about your picture, click on the 'Browse' button to locate it on your computer.
Pictures must:
have a maximum file size of 2MB
-
a minimum image size of 500x400 pixels
-
be in either jpg, gif or png formats
If your image is either too big, too small or in a different format you will need to use a graphics program (like Microsoft Photo Editor or Photoshop) to edit the image before you can upload it.
Uploading a piece of text?
Enter your text (a story, a rant, a poem, anything that you want to tell the world about why our planet needs to be protected) in the 'Description' box and use the little B, U and I buttons to add any formatting just as you would do when writing a document in a program like Microsoft Word.
Please do NOT copy & paste any HTML content in the description field as this may cause the formatting of your text to get a little messed up!
Problems rating content?
To rate a piece of content you first need to be registered and logged into the site. Once you've done that, you can click on the little globes that appear beneath each piece of content. Select the number of globes based on how much you like the content (1 globe is not very good, 5 globes is brilliant) and you're done. You can only rate each piece of content once however, so choose carefully!
Problems adding comments?
To add a comment to an entry you first need to be registered and logged in to the site. You can then enter a comment related to what you see. Maybe you think it is great, maybe you don't agree with what the author has illustrated, maybe you've had a similar experience... Just say it! The only thing we ask is that all comments are in English and that they respect other members of the community. So please make sure you are polite... Once you have clicked on 'add comment' your text is up for all others to read.
Can I contact directly other people who have signed up?
No - sorry - at present you cannot do that. Eventually you will be able to send them a message through the site (but you will never see their email address).
What is connect2earth all about?
connect2earth is an online community for people interested in saving our planet. You upload your photos, your videos or your text (a message, a poem, a slogan, a rant) via this web site or your mobile device.
Once your stuff is up, it can be commented on, voted on, and ranked by everyone else coming to this site. Those getting the most votes and the highest overall ranks will win some really cool mobile phones courtesy of Nokia (awarded at the end of each calendar month). As we get closer to the World Conservation Congress in October 2008, a leading panel of figures will choose from all entries the ones that will be shown to the global gathering in Barcelona. And from all of those, one person will be invited to come and attend the meeting and speak to the assembled mass of brains and influential brawn.
Find out more about the project and how it works
Who is behind it?
connect2earth is a join initiative of WWF and IUCN which has been made possible with the support of Nokia. To find out more about the 3 organizations visit our Who we are page.
How does the competition work?
Each month the content getting the highest rating will win a really cool Nokia phone.
At the end of the competition (31 August 2008) a leading panel of conservation experts will choose the ones that will be shown to the global gathering at the World Conservation Congress in Barcelona. And from all of those, one person will be invited to come and attend the meeting and speak to the assembled mass of brains and influential brawn.
For more details on the competition and the jury please read the competition rules.
How do I report offensive or copyrighted content?
If you spot content that is inappropriate or offensive just click on the 'Flag as inappropriate' button next to the piece of content. This will then be quickly removed from the site.
If you spot content that infringes on your copyright please follow our copyright notice procedure.
I've got a great idea for making the site better, what do I do?
We love feedback. Seriously. So please let us know about what you like on the site, what you hate, and how you think we can make it better. The more feedback we get the better the site will be and the greater the chance we have of making a real difference in protecting the planet.
Any other questions?
Anything else that we haven't covered here? Just let us know and we'll do our best to get back to you quickly. We promise!
